ひろしは車がほしいと思っている。 Hiroshi wants a car.
Since "ほしい" expresses your desire, just like the case of the auxiliary verb "たい", you cannot use it for a third person's desires. You have to use "ほしいと思っている" as I showed above.
私はひろこに優しくしてほしい。 I want Hiroko to be kind to me.
ひろしはさやかに優しくしてほしいと思っている。 Hiroshi wants Sayaka to be kind to him.
