Originally, the word "持つ" meant to hold something in hand. Holding something can mean owning something, so you can regard "持つ" as the corresponding word for the English verb "have." However, there is only so far you can stretch your interpretation. Consciously or unconsciously, people raised in Japanese culture don't think that you can really "own" living things. I think this is the reason why you can't use "持つ" for plants, animals and people.
