The Difference Between 知らない and わからない

I don’t know Mary-Louise Parker.
I don’t understand what you mean.

知らない means “not to know”, and わからない means “not to understand.” However, there are exceptions.

Why do you like salami?
(Incorrect) Well, I don’t know why.
(Correct) Well, I don’t know why.

If you can’t figure out something, you can’t say You have to say The following conversation is another example of this usage.

Which wine do you prefer?
Either will do. I can’t tell the difference between them.
